Ukraine is the largest country in Europe located in the southeastern part of
Central Europe. It is slightly smaller than Texas and slightly larger than
France. Ukraine is one of the world’s youngest nations, yet it is a nation with
thousands of years of history. For hundreds of years, Ukraine was called The
Ukraine” however after claiming its independence in 1991 from Russia after more
than 300 years, “The” was officially dropped and the historical name "Ukraine"
was given back to the country. There are almost 50 million Ukrainians, of which approximately 70% are
Ukrainian Orthodox. The Ukrainian language spoken by approximately 73% of the
population originates from ancient times and is very similar to Russian (the
Cyrillic alphabet) with a few character and pronunciation differences. Ukraine has been blessed with fertile soil and rich natural resources and is
considered one of the most beautiful and culturally rich areas in Europe.
Ukrainian folk arts (ceramics, embroidery, weaving, wood carving) are recognized
throughout the world. Unknown to many, beautifully decorated Easter eggs,
borscht and the Cossack dances originated in Ukraine. Ukraine is undergoing profound economic and political change. A slow but
steady growth is helping Ukraine maintain its newly formed multi party democracy
and its economy.
