Guatemala is a small, spectacularly beautiful country,
located in Central America. It is one of the most
ecologically diverse countries in the world
encompassing 33 volcanoes, tropical forests and
majestic mountains. It is commonly referred to as
"the land of eternal spring" with average temps
hovering around 59 to 77 F degrees.
Guatemala's many Mayan ruins, monuments and colonial
buildings are impressive. Tikal, considered the most spectacular city of the
ancient Mayan civilization is located in the heart of
the jungle and continues to be a major tourist
attraction. Unesco had declared Tikal National Park a
World Heritage Site in 1979, along with the city of
Antigua, considered one of the oldest and most
beautiful cities in the Americas.
Chichicastenango is a white stucco town located about
2 ½ hours from Guatemala City and one of the most
colorful Mayan markets in all the Americas. Located
next to the markets is the 400 hundred-year-old
church, Santo Thomas. The eighteen steps, which lead
to the doorway, is a representation for each of the
months on the Mayan calendar.
The official language is Spanish, however, there are
more than 20 Amerindian languages spoken. There are
approximately 13-14 million inhabitants, about half of
who are of indigenous descent. Guatemalans are a very
proud people and are considered by some to be the most
dedicated protectors of the indigenous population.
"Generosity is not giving me that which I need more
than you do, but it is giving me that which you need
more than I do."
