Bulgaria Bulgaria is a very small country, slightly larger than Tennessee, located in southeastern Europe between Turkey and Romania. It essentially covers the eastern half of the Balkan Peninsula and lies at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Bulgaria’s government is a Parliamentary Republic. The capital, Sofia, is the highest capital in Europe and sits midway between the Adriatic and The Black Sea. The official language is Bulgarian and the alphabet is Cyrillic. English, German, French and Russian is widely spoken in the country's resorts, hotels and restaurants. A great majority of the population is Eastern Orthodox (over 86%), 13% are Muslims. Bulgaria is a country of great beauty with its mountains, ancient cities, Roman ruins, beautiful Black Sea Coast and natural wonders. The World Heritage Committee has inscribed the following nine Bulgarian properties on the World Heritage List: The Rila Monastery, Nessebur, The Kazanluk Tomb, The Sveshtari Tomb, The Madara Horseman, Boyana Church, The Ivanovo Rock Monasteries, Pirin National Park and Sreburna Lake. Bulgarians are justifiably proud of their culture and traditions. In recent years the country has embraced western ideas of capitalism and democracy making it a very welcoming place for foreigners to visit.
